Fiona Thompson

Art House 12
Address: 21 Bath Street
Open: 6/7 and 13/14 September, 10am-6pm

Hand built non-functional ceramic vessels, with multiple layered and printed surfaces. Recent work explores our complex relationship with the domestic animal.

Fiona’s pieces are created in response to broad themes including nostalgia, memory, photographic ‘seeing’, museum display and commemoration. Her focus is on the ‘language’ of the ceramic vessel, reflecting domestic context but also quietly subverting it.

The vessels are coiled, pinched or slab built in stoneware (plates sometimes press-moulded), then painted and printed with coloured slips. Often she incorporates incised lines and mono-printed imagery. They are then glazed; at this stage she may include underglaze pencil or crayon, and oxides. Decals are applied (made from her drawings).

Over the last 30 years her practice has included exhibiting, teaching, residencies, collaborative projects, research, writing for publication and commissions. A professional member of the Craft Potters Association, she has work in various permanent collections including in Taiwan, USA, Canada and UK. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Sunderland.
