Overlapping Orbits. The interaction between memories, place and the temporal tidal space, explored through series of reels, charcoal interpretations and cast pieces.
Thea Chambers McMillan is working on a series of seascape reels, recorded on daily beach walks, revealing the dynamic changes that happen through time in the liminal space between tides. These will be showing continually throughout the day. They will be accompanied by a series of recorded sea-generated coal beach drawings, and a series of charcoal interpretations of these. There will also be a series of caste pieces capturing the textures of memories in the changing space of the beach, and the transitional space between tides. She also considers micro phenomena such as the Bielfeld Brown effect, and stellar constellations, introducing concepts at widely varying scales.
Thea trained as an architect (at University of East London, Technische Universitaet Berlin, and Nottingham university)and has been Design Director of the award-winning Chambers McMillan Architects, which specialises in inclusive accessible design, for the last ten years. She has also specialised in creative workshops, with disabled and neurodivergent children and young people, and researched how these can inform the design process. Thea teaches first year design at ESALA.
The recent acquisition of a studio has given her space to explore creative practices and conceptual architecture, and her current project is investigating how to represent ideas around place containing memories.
