Lost at Sea is a bookwork and window installation inspired by an incident in 1992 when 28,000 plastic bath toys, largely rubber ducks, fell off a cargo ship somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Their subsequent movements were used by oceanographers to learn more about the world’s ocean currents.

The book is made using eco-friendly risograph printing on recycled paper and is approximately A5 in size (copies available for sale in Portobello Bookshop alongside her installation).

Sophie Demery is an artist and printmaker based in Musselburgh, Scotland. She completed a BA Hons in Illustration at the Edinburgh College of Art in 2018 where her fascination with the sea gradually became the focus of her practice.

Often research and location based, Demery’s work is made up of a combination of printmaking, photography, collage and digital processes. A preoccupation with all things nautical has led to past projects covering subjects including flashing patterns of Scottish lighthouses, ocean currents, plastic pollution and Scottish fishing folklore.
