Sheila McDonald

Art House 3
Address: 16 Rosefield Place
Open: 7/8 and 14/15 September

A selection of precious (silver) and non-precious jewellery featuring vitreous enamel with fine gold and silver foil. The work is bright and painterly, reflecting a love of drawing techniques.

Drawing and painting has always been the starting point for the designs; the challenge is to retain the free spirit without becoming too rigid. Inspiration can be birds, sweet wrappers, plants, intricate patterns. Traditional silversmithing and jewellery skills are used to produce the pieces which are then enamelled with transparent and opaque enamels on silver. By adding layers of fine gold and silver foil in the enamel Sheila achieves a depth of colour and shimmer unique to this medium. Vitreous enamel is ground finely, washed and then the fine grains are applied wet to the surface of the metal which is dried before firing in a hot kiln. The grains of enamel fuse to create a smooth shiny surface; this can take several firings. Sheila’s workshop is in Edinburgh; she is an experienced tutor and offers enamel workshops.
