Art House 35
Address: 10 Queens Bay Crescent
Open: 7/8 September
Mike will be showing a selection of paintings in oils and acrylics, dealing with ideas based on the local environment. His work is known for its colourful and expressive images.
Michael Kinane as an artist, is continuing to personalise his output, experimenting more with various techniques to create more expressive outcomes. An abstract feel can result, which hopefully enhances ‘atmosphere’ in each individual piece. Colour is crucial to this process. The aim is to use the shore and local surroundings to create ‘little worlds’ in their own right. He may start with a coloured ground, building into this with thick paint to suggest jagged rocks or the relentless energy of tidal surf. The ‘power of suggestion’ is important to him, whereby a sense of mystery is developed which can pull the viewer in and spur the imagination. The artist works from a whole array of stimuli, from studies done on site, in his allotment, perhaps combined with photographs and found material. This to inform a strong, ‘real’ interpretation of ‘place’. A big influence on Mike is the work of expressionist painters like Oscar Kokoschka and Van Gogh.
Mike graduated from Edinburgh College of Artin 1978, Dip Drawing and Painting. Mike has exhibited widely and shows work in the Velvet Easel gallery. He regularly undertakes commissions and has been part of Porty Artwalk for many years.
