Karl Stern

Art House 30
Address: 71 Promenade
Open: 7/8 and 14/15 September

Karl will be showing his colourful collagraph paintings and prints of people and landscapes. They reflect humour and mood. He’ll be selling framed and mountedworks plus his wide selection of greetings cards.

Karl’s abstract but representative images are often full of colour. Although he does make oil and acrylic canvas paintings, the bulk of his work is on card and drawn by knife and painted using shellac and pigments. He then uses the work as a printing plate and the printing process itself creates prints as well as finishing the painting with line and tone. Karl is interested in form and its relationship with its surroundings whether figurative, buildings or landscape. Some figures are imaginative, others drawn of friends and models. His landscapes demonstrate a certain mood reflecting wherever they are painted. Landscapes in Iceland, for instance, are popular and colourful but more sombre than those of France. This show contains new work from both Iceland and some abstract figurative work.

Studied at Leith School of Art Edinburgh 2011-13

Exhibited this year so far in Glasgow, Perth and Pittenweem and, of course, Art Walk Porty.

Often selected for open shows eg PAI RSA VAS and awarded the best small picture prize and the Art Lovers Prize in 22.

Karl has attended residencies in Canada, France, Finland, Portugal and Iceland. He generally travels to make his work though figurative work is often completed in his home town of Edinburgh. Karl took a break from painting between July and December 23, resuming in 24.
