Jenny Martin

Art House 21
Address: 7 Esplanade Terrace
Open: 2/3 and 9/10 September

Jenny Martin RSW is a painter and printmaker who makes colourful, patterned images of objects and places. For this year’s Artwalk, she is exhibiting still lifes and work inspired by her recent trip to Spain.

Jenny’s work is predominantly about the things she loves: colour; pattern; beautiful objects; textiles; quirky shops; and making things. She is strongly inspired by textiles, which she teaches at Leith School of Art, and her paintings are characterised by a playful use of mixed patterns and surfaces. She started printmaking at Edinburgh Printmakers after leaving Edinburgh College of Art where she studied painting, initially drawn to screen-printing, attracted by the possibilities of layering colour, drawn marks and found textures. During the pandemic, she started using linocut in her studio, experimenting with bolder shapes and abstracted patterns. Now she prints in both media, alongside her painting, exploring objects she has collected, found or inherited from her family, to create bold, graphic paintings and prints. She has won awards for her paintings and prints and is an elected member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
