Art in Shops – Venue 23
Eyden’s Cafe, 215 Portobello High Street

A collection of mosaic artwork inspired by traditional fairground signage, celebrating the forgotten names and places of Portobello’s vibrant showground.
Helen’s work draws inspiration from the names of places, people and activities associated with Portobello showground, now largely consigned to memory and archive. The showground ‘Fun City’, reincarnated over the years, was once alive with Marvello and the Silver Hat, the Ocean Roller Rink and ‘Fortune’ seekers. Brightly coloured signs would have lured people into the world of illusion, spectacle and joy. In reimagining these four signs in handcrafted mosaics, she aims to capture the spirit and nostalgia of these lost artefacts in a new enduring form.

With a Fine Art degree in Printmaking, Helen now works from her Edinburgh studio as a freelance artist and set dresser where storytelling through objects, colour and atmosphere continues to shape her creative practice.
