Fiona’s work is driven by found and encountered objects which she prints directly from, exploring familiar things in a new way, creating a new narrative and context for them.
Fiona’s practice is playful and multifaceted, exploring themes of nostalgia , loss and memory through objects and materials that have a particular significance for her. She responds to found and encountered objects using a combination of different printmaking processes to explore them, using the results to direct the way forward. There is a plan and no plan, her process starts spontaneously before experimenting and developing ideas. Her most recent body of work was sparked by the discovery of a cache of dumped broken vinyl records – this has led to a sustained period of cumulative practice – exploring themes and ideas. Fiona is inspired by and curious about things that have reached the end of their useful life and incorporates images of birds, which symbolise nature’s resilience in the face of adversity and are also a metaphor for the inner strength and adaptability humans present when confronted with sudden change and challenges.
Fiona studied at Edinburgh College of Art -‘79-’83 Graduating in Printmaking
She was Artist in Residence 2021/22 in Penicuik for a 6 month printmaking residency exploring the paper making history of the town . She initiated and curated a year-long participative arts project in 2021- Necklace of Days – as we came out of lockdown with approx150 participants cumulating in a week long exhibition at Custom House , Leith.
