As part of our ongoing Field-Studies in Radical Mycography Project with Myceliart Collective, Rhyze Mushrooms present this workshop, the first of two events running through the Art Walk Porty Festival.
Come and learn about the decomposing power of mushrooms and practice some simple techniques for growing oyster mushrooms from common household waste. Bring your own plastic containers including juice bottles, shopping bags, yogurt tubs, etc. Make sure to give your item a prior clean, and don’t bring plastic that has been used to store toxic or hazardous chemicals.
The workshop will include a brief introduction to home mushroom cultivation, some hands-on practice inoculating your container, and a tour of the Rhyze Mushroom farm where we grow oyster mushrooms from local mushrooms from local business waste.
Rhyze runs Edinburgh’s Community Mushroom Farm which works to turn trash into food. In 2021, they built a mushroom farm inside a 40 ft shipping container using upcycled materials wherever they could. Their mushrooms are grown on urban waste streams that would otherwise end up in landfills, including: sawdust, coffee chaff, spent brewer’s grain, and cacao husks.
