Duncan Barrett is a painter working in acrylics, showing a series of landscapes and seascapes of Portobello and the surrounding area.
In his series of seascapes depicting Portobello, Duncan aims to explore the deep connection between humanity and the ever-changing coastal environment. Transitioning from diverse creative roles—illustrator, musician, and radio DJ/advice columnist—his relocation to Edinburgh in 2020 sparked a profound evolution in his artistic journey. Immersed in the coastal splendour of Portobello, daily walks and life by the sea ignited a newfound passion for figurative painting. His seascapes and landscapes serve as a homage to this transformation, celebrating the area’s natural beauty while subtly addressing ecological change. This shift in practice represents a deepening connection to his surroundings; a vessel for introspection and advocacy, urging viewers to appreciate and protect the fragile ecosystems that sustain us.
Duncan Barrett graduated 2006 BA Illustration, Brighton University.
He has worked as a freelance illustrator for a diverse range of clients including The Guardian and Attitude Magazine.
As a musician he has toured Europe and North America, recording radio sessions for the BBC and performed on Los Conciertos de Radio 3 in Spain.
He hosts a monthly radio show alongside Sarah Lippett for Palanga Street Radio based in Vilnius, Lithuania.
