New drawings & clay works exploring the interconnectedness of memory, touch & domestic space. Front garden installation of ceramics with works on paper indoors.

Becky Brewis’ drawings, textiles and ceramics explore relationships between autobiography, the body and domestic space. Skin, paper, domestic interiors and cosmetics represent overlapping imagery and point to surface, artifice and boundaries. With digital technology increasingly replacing the paper trails of lives lived, her work invites reflection on how our personal memories are embedded within the wider material culture of our times. Past projects have focused on library books, VHS recordings, WWII newspapers, ancient anatomical votives and 90s photo albums covers. Recent work explores the materials of environments at home–the walls, wallpaper, and paraphernalia that are the stuff of our immediate surroundings. Her drawings and ceramics feed into one another. Both incorporate textures taken directly from life –from found surfaces – and mix these up with other processes to create a tension between narrative and material surface.
